I co‑developed, designed, and facilitated synchronous professional learning for Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) coaches and educators, grounded in instructional design principles and focused on building foundational proficiency with Apple’s native applications, including Keynote, Pages, Clips, iMovie, Numbers, and GarageBand. The sessions were structured to scaffold skill development, model effective pedagogy, and demonstrate how each tool supports learning outcomes and standards‑aligned instruction.
The training equipped teachers and coaches with the competencies needed to integrate iPads purposefully into instruction and provided strategies that strengthen creativity, engagement, and student demonstration of learning.
VILS Coaches have implemented this content with their staff and students, reinforcing skill transfer, strengthening digital integration, and expanding instructional capacity across their campuses.
While developing the course, I identified a parallel need for student‑facing foundational skills with iPad apps and the operating system. To address this gap, I designed a series of Canvas modules that teachers could use to orient students to essential iPad functionality and core Apple applications. The modules were structured to support gradual skill development, reduce cognitive load, and prepare students to engage more confidently with classroom tasks.
These student‑ready modules were published to the VILS Commons, allowing coaches to download and implement them across their schools. This expanded the reach of the training and ensured that both educators and students had the baseline skills required for effective iPad integration.
These modules were developed based on teacher feedback and student needs.
The VILS Apps Teacher Edition Canvas course equipped teachers with the foundational skills needed to integrate iPads effectively into classroom instruction. Educators were introduced to Apple’s native applications and engaged in hands‑on tutorials designed to build confidence, support skill transfer, and model how each tool aligns with instructional goals.
During the training sessions, I noticed that many teachers struggled to enroll themselves in the Canvas course. To reduce onboarding friction and support a smoother learning experience, I added a QR code that allowed teachers to self‑enroll directly from their iPads. This design adjustment streamlined access, minimized cognitive load, and improved the overall flow of the training.
